How to Care for Irish Wool

Keep your knits looking their best for years to come

There’s something timeless about Irish wool – the way it feels, wears, and holds a story. Whether it’s a hand-loomed Aran sweater or a soft wool scarf, caring for your Irish wool properly will help it last a lifetime (and maybe even become a family heirloom).

Here’s our tried-and-true advice from the heart of Donegal

1. Air It Out – Don’t Over-Wash

Wool is naturally antibacterial and odour-resistant, meaning it doesn’t need frequent washing. Simply hang it outside on a dry day to freshen it up – the Donegal breeze is optional, but recommended!

2. Hand-Wash with Care

If your wool needs a clean, hand-wash it in cool or lukewarm water with a gentle wool detergent. Avoid hot water – it causes shrinkage. Gently press the garment, never rub or wring.

3. Dry Flat – Always

After washing, reshape your knit and lay it flat on a towel to dry. Never hang wet wool – it will stretch. And avoid tumble dryers completely (your jumper will thank you).

4. Store It Right

Fold wool knits rather than hanging them, to avoid pulling out the shape. If storing long-term, keep them in a breathable cotton bag with a little lavender or cedarwood to ward off moths.

5. Mend, Don’t Toss

A tiny hole or pulled thread? Don’t worry – Irish wool is durable and mendable. We believe in fixing what we love. A simple darning kit can go a long way.

Caring for your Irish wool is about slowing down and honouring the tradition behind it. These pieces aren’t just clothes – they’re a connection to craftsmanship, nature, and home.
